“An
original is a creation motivated by desire. Any reproduction
of an original is motivated by necessity. It is marvelous that
we are the only
species that creates gratuitous forms. To create is divine, to
reproduce is human.”
[Man Ray, Artist]
This
zine does not exist. Not the in the way you think it does, anyway.
It is merely a reproduction of things that already exist. It may
seem real, but trust me, it is all illusion here.
THE
EVIL EYE was originally presented in seven distinct issues,
each a twenty-two page format, distributed monthly, and with a
very limited circulation of seven copies per issue. Each
issue had a subject, starting with Inspiration,
and ending with Creation. In between were Experience,
Delusion, Transience, Fascination,
and Observation.
I
was urged by my few patrons to strive for larger distribution,
and I finally decided to take their advice. To me, it was an extremely
tough decision. But I felt like I was betraying my duty as an
Artist by keeping my artwork mostly to myself.
The
content of this zine is compiled of what I considered to be the
most significant from the original seven issues. The layout for
each page is exactly the same as it appeared initially. The things
that truly matter have not changed. However, the content from
one issue’s subject does seem to blend into the next with
barely a pause for breath, until the thoughts presented seem like
the whisperings of a million voices in a madhouse.
While
this may be more than appealing to many, to some, it may seem
too overwhelming. I can have no idea what others reading this
zine for the first time may think or feel about it. I am completely
biased, so all I say is:
I hope you enjoy it.
The
original seven issues of The Evil Eye were my tribute to creativity.
This compilation was motivated by necessity. If you do enjoy what
you see here, let me know. If you don’t like it, pass it
on to someone you think will.
